9/11/25 – David Jolley Addresses Kingston Rotary Club
David Jolley was the guest speaker at the September 10, 2025, meeting of the Kingston Rotary Club. He talked about his Times Leader newspaper column, books, website, and other writing projects as they relate to larger topics including civil rights, youth athletics, ALS research, pancreatic cancer research, athlete-humanitarians, mental health and suicide prevention.
“Kingston Rotary does a tremendous job fulfilling its service mission, so I believed it pertinent to talk about tying my writing in whenever possible to helping others,” Dave said. “I learned of and am impressed by the Club’s efforts to provide coats and other warm clothing for area Veterans in need, as well as elementary school children.”
Dave was invited to speak by longtime Kingston Rotarian, Dr. Richard Kaufer.
“I’ve known Richard for about 50 years and he has been my dogs’ veterinarian for about 40 of those years,” Dave said. “It was a pleasure to attend the Rotary meeting with him, meet his fellow Rotarians, and talk with the group.

7/27/25 – David Jolley Attends Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

David Jolley attended the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on July 27, 2025, as part of the media contingent covering the event. Watch for his column in the Times Leader newspaper as well as blog posts at www.davidajolley.com regarding Dave’s impressions of induction day in Cooperstown.
The Class of 2025 inducted into the Hall of Fame are Dick Allen, CC Sabathia, Dave Parker, Ichiro Suzuki, and Billy Wagner.

Dave has campaigned for Dick Allen’s long overdue election to the Hall for over five years, including newspaper columns, social media pieces, and letters to the Hall of Fame leadership and election committees.
“Thanks to Mark Carfagno, a friend of Dick Allen and the Allen family, who spearheaded the overall effort to get Dick into the Hall of Fame, I’ve been part of this cause for several years,” said Dave. “Our efforts finally paid off this year and I felt a responsibility and a need to see it through and cover the induction ceremony. Dick Allen was one of my favorite players when I was young.”

Jolley included Dave Parker, who was also long overdue for the Hall of Fame, in many of his interviews and pieces, and was pleased for Parker to be inducted this year. “Dave Parker passed away about a month ago from Parkinson’s Disease, so it was bittersweet for him not to physically be at the induction ceremony in Cooperstown,” Dave added. “It was fitting, though, for Parker and Dick Allen to be members of the same class of inductees.”

5/8/25 – David Jolley to Complete Dick Allen’s Hall of Fame Story at July Induction Ceremony in Cooperstown
Kingston, PA – Dave Jolley was attending a Philadelphia Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park several years ago when he stopped at a display promoting Dick Allen’s candidacy for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He signed a petition in favor of Allen being elected to the Hall and then wrote his first newspaper column about Allen to garner additional support.

Many columns later, Jolley plans on completing Dick Allen’s Hall of Fame story by covering Allen’s induction ceremony on Sunday, July 27, in Cooperstown, New York. His sports column appears in the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader newspaper.
“Everything just took off after stopping at the Dick Allen table at the Phillies game,” Jolley said. “I met Mark “Frog” Carfagno, the leader of the ‘Dick Allen Belongs in the Hall of Fame’ group, and knew I had to become part of it.”
Carfagno, a former member of the grounds crew at Veterans Stadium, became friends with Allen and remains close to the Allen family.
“Mark shared how friendly Dick was, always making it a point to visit with everyone and get to know them,” Jolley explained. “That, along with his impressive career statistics and the significant accolades provided by his managers and teammates throughout his career gave us plenty of material to share on his behalf.”
Allen played 15 seasons in the major leagues (1963-1977), nine with the Philadelphia Phillies, with 1,848 hits, 351 home runs, 1,119 RBIs, and had a career .292 average during a time when 35 home runs were most often enough to lead the league. He was a complete player who also fielded multiple positions, ran the bases swiftly and effectively, scored 1,099 runs, and had a strong throwing arm until suffering a shoulder injury. Allen won the 1964 National League Rookie of the Year award, the 1972 American League Most Valuable Player award, and was a seven-time All-Star.
“I’ve come this far with Dick Allen – not as far as Mark Carfagno has – but long enough that I am compelled to finish Allen’s Hall of Fame journey by attending the induction ceremony and writing about this long awaited day,” Jolley said. “Dick passed away in 2020, so that makes it bittersweet, but I am so happy for his loved ones and friends that he is finally being honored as a member of the Hall of Fame.”
